Taking No for an Answer Is the Whole Skill

Every rule on this site turns out to be a restatement of one thing, and a guest who has that one thing will never find booking here complicated.

If you stripped this site down to a sentence it would be this one: a no is a no, from anybody, at any point, the first time. Everything else is that sentence applied to a particular situation.

The thread will not answer a fifth question. A therapist may decline a booking. A limit stated at the start does not move. A visit can end at the point she chooses. A request from somebody else's number is not taken up. Five rules, one idea.

Where the nos come from

Three places. A therapist declining a request, before it is agreed or after. The house declining one, which happens where a thread went somewhere it should not have, where an address is outside the area covered, or where something about the request cannot be arranged. And her ending a visit after she has arrived, which is the least common and the one people find hardest.

None of the three comes with a reason attached, and that is deliberate rather than cold.

Why reasons are not given

Because a reason is a handle, and a handle invites a pull. Give a guest an explanation and you have given him something to address, so a second message arrives addressing it, entirely in good faith, and now a decision has become a negotiation.

The second reason is simpler. The honest explanation is frequently nobody's business. She may be committed. She may not be working. She may have read the message and decided it was not for her, which she is entitled to do without accounting for it to a stranger on a phone.

What a no costs a guest

An evening, and nothing else. A request that was simply declined leaves no record anywhere. Nothing follows a guest around, and a message next month is read on its own terms as though the first had never arrived.

The house does not keep a list of people who were turned down, because there would be nothing useful in it. The only things written down are narrow and specific: a booking under somebody else's name or number, one sent as a prank, or a visit that ended because a limit was pushed at. An ordinary no is in none of those categories.

What arguing costs

Considerably more, and here is the mechanism. Arguing does not change the decision, because the decision was not made on grounds the guest has access to. What it does change is the only question the house actually has to answer about a stranger, which is how an hour with him would have gone.

A thread that keeps pushing is closed rather than answered. A second account is worse still, because a booking under a name that is not yours is a false booking by definition, and that is precisely the kind of thing that does get written down. The guest who accepted the first no could have written again next month with nothing on file. The guest who tried again under a different name produced the file himself.

The version that stings

A no at the door is different in feeling from a no in a thread, and pretending otherwise would be useless. The circumstances are narrow and they are printed in advance: where she cannot settle that everybody present is twenty-one or over, where somebody is in no state to hold to what she says at the start, where her safety or comfort is not respected, or where a stated limit is pushed at.

The fee for the reserved time stands and nothing is added to it. There is no further charge, nothing to settle later, and no document of any kind afterwards. It ends there.

Why this is the whole skill

Because everything else about booking here is easy. Four facts in a message. A figure printed in a profile. A window of forty to sixty minutes. None of that requires any ability at all.

The one thing it requires is the capacity to hear a refusal and let it be a refusal. Guests who have that find this arrangement one of the plainer things they will arrange on a trip. Guests who do not find it difficult almost immediately, which is not an accident and not a design flaw. It is the design.
