The Question Everyone Asks, and Why It Has No Answer

It arrives in about one message in three, sometimes in the first line and sometimes buried at the end of a perfectly ordinary booking request. Guests want to know, before they commit an evening and a sum of money, what a session contains.

Nobody thinks less of anybody for asking. It is a reasonable instinct, it comes from the same place as reading a menu before sitting down, and the people who ask it are usually the more careful guests rather than the less. But it has no answer in a booking thread, and the reason is not squeamishness.

The answer would be a forgery

Whoever typed it would be speaking for a woman who is elsewhere in the city at the time, who has not read the exchange, and who is not bound by a syllable of it. The contents of a session are for her to settle. That is not a formula repeated out of caution; it describes who actually holds the decision.

So any answer given in the thread would be a forgery in the plainest sense: a signature written by somebody without the pen. And a forged answer does not stay quietly forged. It travels with the guest to a hotel room and meets the real decision in the first two minutes of a visit, which is the worst possible place and time for a correction.

Why a hint is the same thing wearing a hat

Some guests, sensing that a direct answer is not coming, go looking for an indirect one. A knowing phrase. A question framed so that silence itself would be informative. A remark that invites a wink.

None of that works here, and the refusal to play is deliberate rather than prim. A hint carries exactly the same freight as a promise: the guest leaves the conversation believing something. If the belief did not come from the person who will be in the room, it is no more reliable for having been implied rather than stated. A wink is a promise in a hat.

What the silence is not

It is not a rebuke. There is no note made, nothing is held against the message, and the rest of the booking proceeds normally. The reply simply answers the address, the hour, the length and the figure, and leaves the other part alone.

It is not a test either. Guests sometimes suspect that a correctly phrased version would pass, and try four. They all get the same reply, which is the only honest thing the thread can do.

Where the answer actually lives

With her, at the start of the visit, in her own words. She says where her limits sit before anything begins, and what she says holds for the whole of the time she is there. That conversation takes a minute, it happens in person between the two people it concerns, and it is the only version of the answer that is worth anything.

Guests who have been through it a few times tend to describe it as the part that makes the evening easy. Nothing has to be inferred. Nobody is reading signals. The uncertainty that a thread could not honestly remove is removed in person, in the first minute, by the one person entitled to remove it.

What to do with the uncertainty in the meantime

Two practical things. First, read her profile properly rather than skimming it; the women here write about how they work, and a great deal of what guests try to extract from a thread is already sitting in those paragraphs in better words.

Second, book the length you would book if everything went exactly as you hoped, and no longer. A guest hedging against an unknown by booking four hours has bought four hours, and a session that ends early is still paid at the booked figure because the time was held for him.

The last thing worth saying

A guest who accepts the silence gets a booking arranged inside two minutes with every fact in it true. A guest who cannot accept it spends twenty minutes on rewordings and often ends up without a booking at all. That is the whole of the difference, and it is entirely within the guest's control, which is why this site says so on as many pages as it reasonably can.
