She Says Where the Limits Are, and Then They Hold

One conversation at the start of a visit does more work than every rule on this site put together, and it belongs entirely to the person who has just arrived.

Everything written elsewhere on this site is scaffolding around a single minute. It happens after she has come in and before anything begins, and it consists of her saying, in her own words, where her limits are. That minute is the arrangement. The rest is administration around it.

Why it happens in person

Because she is the only person who can hold that conversation honestly. She decides what a session includes, and she decides for herself which bookings she takes in the first place. Nobody writing a booking thread has any standing to speak for her, and a thread that tried would be making a promise the guest could not rely on and she never agreed to.

Doing it in person also means it is specific to her rather than to a policy. Two women on the same roster will not say the same thing, because they are two people rather than two copies of a document. A guest who has booked here more than once will have noticed that already.

Why it happens first

So that nothing has to be inferred later. The alternative is an hour of reading signals, which is unpleasant for one person and unnerving for the other, and which produces exactly the misunderstandings that a minute of plain speech prevents.

It also means a guest knows where he stands before anything is underway, at a point when he can still ask an ordinary question and get an ordinary answer. Questions are fine in that minute. What is not fine is treating the answers as an opening position.

They do not move

Not for a longer booking. Not for a larger figure. Not for flattery, not for a joke framed as a test, and not for the third attempt phrased more softly than the second.

A limit that could be moved by any of those would not have been a limit; it would have been a price, and nothing of that kind is for sale here at any number. The house cannot move one either, which is the reason a booking thread never hints that it might.

What happens if one is pushed at

The visit ends at that moment and she leaves. What was booked remains payable, since the hours had been set aside and the journey had already been made, and not a euro is put on top of it. Nothing is argued about on the landing and nothing follows afterwards except a short internal note.

That is written down in advance, on several pages of this site, for one reason: so that it cannot be a surprise to anybody. A rule that appears only after it has been broken is a trap. A rule printed on the public pages of a website before anyone books is simply information.

The thing guests get wrong about it

They hear it as a restriction on the evening, and it is closer to the opposite. Uncertainty is what makes a first booking uncomfortable, and this minute removes it. Guests who have been through it a few times describe the same thing in different words: once you know where the edges are, you stop thinking about the edges.

There is a version of this in ordinary life that everybody already accepts. A conversation at the beginning of anything, setting out plainly how it will work, is a kindness rather than a constraint, and the people who resent it are usually the ones hoping the vagueness would have gone their way.

The one skill required

Listening, and taking what you hear at face value the first time. Nothing else is asked for. A guest capable of that will find every part of booking here straightforward for as long as he cares to keep doing it.

She may also end a visit at a point of her choosing, and she does not owe a reason for that any more than she owes one for declining a booking in the first place. A guest who can hear a no without arguing with it has the only qualification this arrangement actually asks for, and the great majority of people who write here already have it.

One small practical point to end on. If something she says at the start does not match what you thought you had arranged, that is the moment to say so, calmly and in ordinary words. A question asked in the first minute is a question and gets a straight answer. The same question asked in the fortieth is a negotiation, and it will be read as one.
