Lory sets out from De Pijp once the hour and the address are fixed, and in central Amsterdam that puts her at a door inside forty to sixty minutes. If a bridge is up or a tram has stopped she writes rather than letting a guest watch the clock, which is a habit she keeps even when the delay is four minutes. She is twenty-six, brunette, and works in Romanian and in English without making a performance of either. A booking to Schiphol is a separate arrangement with the journey time agreed before anything is fixed, and she will not pretend that trip is the same as a crossing of the middle of town.
