Lucy would much rather read a sentence that means what it says than decode one built to avoid saying it. Nothing put to her politely embarrasses her, and nothing put to her politely gets a colder answer than it deserves. She is twenty-four, blonde, and lives in the Centrum a few minutes from the Singel, which keeps her arrivals reliable. English is her working language and she uses it economically, in the room and in writing. The one thing she asks in return is that a no, when she gives one, is heard the first time.

Lucy decides which bookings she takes and may decline any of them; she sets the limits for what a session includes, says what they are, and may end a visit at any point, as the terms set out.
